OUR STORY
Grassroots Community Development Group was started in 2005 as a response to the devastating effects of the meth epidemic affecting youth and families in Puna, Hawai'i. From 2005-2008 GCDG worked to establish the first middle college dual credit program in the state of Hawai`i as well as create a youth-driven Learning Center, with programs in music and recording, digital media, and culinary arts.

Today, we partner with several community projects around food sustainability, 'aloha aina, ho'oponopono, youth and elder enrichment, arts events, and community activism. We strive to uplift our community through diverse arts in health and wellness, culture, and family well being.
CORE PROGRAMS
OLA'A SKATE PARK
At the height of the pandemic, GCDG and community members banded together with Hawaii County to revision a run down tennis court into Kea'au's only skate park. The community of Kea'au has few recreational opportunities for youth and family, and we're proud to see Ola'a Skate Park being used by community members every day since its opening.
LA'AU OHANA
Ho'oponopono traditional practices are appropriately taught by cultural practitioners. La'au 'Ohana program works with dedicated students and their families to practice these values. Kumu Lahela brings her wisdom from her teacher Aunty Pearl Ulunuiokamamalu Kanaka`ole Garmon. Aunty Lahela is dedicated to serving 'ohana on Hawai'i Island especially, promoting annual programs in all districts.
MEDIA LITERACY
Never has there been a time where media literacy could be so impactful. The Cambridge Analytica case showed online communities how frequently even the most typical internet users unknowingly may see and share misinformation. Media Literacy teaches both children and adults basic tools for critical thinking about our media, and ways we can confirm fact from fiction.
